A National Research and Education Network (NREN) is a specialized internet service provider designed to support the research and education community of a country through a high-speed backbone and advanced network services.
We currently interconnect all UGC-funded state universities, a number of public universities under other ministries, the University Grants Commission, the Ministry of Higher Education, and several national research institutions including the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Our network is an advanced infrastructure supporting IPv6 and multicast, with optical fiber links ranging from 2 Gbps to 10 Mbps across most campuses.
At present, our international connectivity bandwidth is 20 Gbps, including 3 Gbps dedicated to academic networks that connect the academic and research Internet through the TEIN4 network, SingAREN to Internet2, and NKN.
We also maintain direct connections to SchoolNet, linking secondary schools, and the Local Government Network (LGN), connecting government institutions across Sri Lanka.
